"The theory suggests that happiness and sadness are equally neutral in the end. No one can be happy or sad their whole life because it remains neutral for each person. The sadness that one feels is due to past memories of happiness that cause pain and sadness in the present. For instance, if you had a friend or a lover with whom you were happy, leaving them or changes in your relationship will bring about sadness because the memories of happiness are now in the past. This sadness is natural and necessary.

If you experienced extreme happiness for a year, it is possible that you may experience extreme sadness for a month, causing you to forget the happiness you once felt. However, after this phase, your sadness becomes negative, making you appreciate the smallest things and lowering your happiness standards, allowing you to feel happy again. The cycle continues." - Eyad Sfeir
